About Us
We invite you to share "Wisteria Way", the creative expression of our connection to the gardens and the whenua we call home - our celebration of the beauty of flowers and nature, nestled in the natural surrounds and bush clad hills of beautiful Waimamaku Valley.
Just minutes from the Waipoua Forest, home of Tane Mahuta when heading south or the beautiful Hokianga Harbour if heading north, we welcome you to enjoy the peace and comfort of our little cottages and developing gardens or the coffee garden and gift shop while you explore the Hokianga area.
We are Bruce and Teresa. For Bruce, after many years of operating the local Four Square grocery store in Waimamaku village, 2020 was time for a change of pace. Home being an original old kauri villa on a hectare at the base of the Wekaweka / Waimamaku River Valley hills and the Waipoua Forest, it was now time to enjoy being at home, discovering the joy of gardening and together with Teresa, sharing our joy and appreciation of our surrounds with travelers and locals alike.
Three little cottages, Lavender Cottage, Camelia Cottage and Rose Cottage, a common room and a shared bathroom block were built for us in what was a grassy paddock style space with 3 surviving pear trees planted by early European settlers in the late 1800's - early 1900's. With these built, we embarked on creating a space where travelers could stop while they explored the beautiful Hokianga. Gradually the vision grew to converting the old derelict barn into a "reception", coffee garden and gift shop. Connecting this to the cottages with the replanting of what started out - but was never quite finished- as a secret garden for our children 10 or more years earlier wove the two experiences together with a meandering path.
The gardens flourished, we finished the cottages and we felt it was ready to share so opened the doors for guests in November 2022.
As each season passes we make small changes. In winter 2025 we redeveloped the cottages, changing the format of what was a mixed dorm into a cottage for a small family, and added a private bathroom and kitchenette to Lavender Cottage. Our wild and beautiful gardens spread as we continue to plant while trying to tame the roses and wisteria that grow in abundance around the property.
If you're passing through or stopping for a while, we welcome you to visit at Wisteria Way and be touched gently by the timelessness that is Hokianga
